The Next Whisky Bar – A Kurt Weill Cabaret makes its world premiere today at the Shaw Festival

- Sold out limited run show features the music of German-American composer Weill presented in the specially created Studio Underground -

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (August 21, 2015) — For six nights only – August 21, 22, 28, 29 and September 4 and 5 – the Shaw Festival presents The Next Whisky Bar – A Kurt Weill Cabaret in the newly created Studio Underground at 10 Queen’s Parade. This production, conceived by Paul Sportelli and Jay Turvey, features songs with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht, as well as Ira Gershwin, Langston Hughes and Elmer Rice, Maxwell Anderson and Roger Fernay.

Germany, 1923. A run-down bar in a port town frequented by sailors and prostitutes. Accompanied by a six-piece band, the hopes, dreams, loves and lusts of these lost souls are expressed through the distinctive, raucous and always beguiling music of composer Kurt Weill.

Directed by Jay Turvey, this world premiere features musical direction by Paul Sportelli, choreography by Linda Garneau, with set and costume design by William Schmuck, lighting design by Kevin Lamotte and sound design by John Lott. The Next Whisky Bar – A Kurt Weill Cabaret is generously sponsored by James F. Brown.
