You Never Can Tell previews at the Shaw Festival

- Jim Mezon directs Bernard Shaw romantic-comedy of errors -

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (April 26, 2015) You Never Can Tell starts previews today in the intimate Royal George Theatre. Director and renowned Shavian actor Jim Mezon, along with an assembled cast of exceptional Shaw Ensemble talent, tackle Shaw’s wit and words in a fresh production of one of Bernard Shaw’s most entertaining and light-hearted plays.

A happy mash-up of contemporary and historical elements by designer Leslie Frankish, lighting design by Kimberly Purtell, projections design by Cameron Davis, original music and sound by John Gzowski and movement by Jane Johanson heightens the production’s air of timelessness.

Returning to England after 18 years, Mrs. Clandon (Tara Rosling) and her three children – twins Dolly (Jennifer Dzialoszynski) and Phillip (Stephen Jackman-Torkoff), and Gloria (Julia Course) – readjust to British life at a summer resort. In this comedy of errors, the children unintentionally invite their estranged father Fergus Crampton (Patrick McManus) to a lunch. The resulting awkward family reunion is witnessed by family lawyer Finch M’Comas (Peter Krantz), who finds himself the butt of the twins’ jokes. Meanwhile, Valentine (Gray Powell), a dentist, falls for modern woman Gloria, whose ideals don’t include love or marriage. And through the chaos and the madness, kindly waiter William (Peter Millard) dispenses wisdom with the familiar refrain of “You never can tell.”

You Never Can Tell is on stage at the Royal George Theatre (85 Queens Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake) from April 26 to October 25 (Opening May 14). First presented at The Shaw in 1963, You Never Can Tell was last seen at the Festival in 2005.

You Never Can Tell is sponsored by the Gabriel Pascal Memorial Fund.
