J.B. Priestley’s When We Are Married begins previews at the Royal George Theatre

- Joseph Ziegler returns to direct delightful farce -

Newsroom Post #5

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (May 6, 2014) —The Shaw Festival’s production of When We Are Married, J.B. Priestley’s comic take-down of Edwardian middle class pretension, begins previews on Wednesday, May 7 at the Royal George Theatre. Joseph Ziegler returns to direct a consummate cast of Shaw Festival talent that features Patrick Galligan, Kate Hennig, Claire Jullien, Catherine McGregor, Thom Marriott and Patrick McManus. The creative team includes set designer Ken MacDonald, costume designer Sue LePage, with lighting design by Louise Guinand and original music and sound design by Marek Norman.

Three upstanding couples gather to celebrate their joint silver wedding anniversaries in a prosperous Yorkshire town. As the evening of celebration progresses, a stunning secret is revealed: the minister who married them did not have the proper legal qualifications to do so; therefore none of them are legally married! As each couple comes to terms with the revelation, their current situations are swiftly and humorously re-evaluated. Is this an opportunity for a second chance at love or an escape from less than true marital bliss?

Acknowledged as one of the “funniest and … most enduring plays that J.B. Priestley wrote”, When We Are Married is not only a comedy overflowing with laughter, but as always, has a sting in its tail.
