Shaw Festival’s production of groundbreaking Cabaret now in previews

- Glittering new version of the award-winning musical on stage at Festival Theatre -

Newsroom Post #3

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (April 11, 2014) — Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! It’s time to leave your troubles outside! The Shaw Festival’s production of the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret is now in previews at the Festival Theatre. Under the direction of Peter Hinton, this hard-hitting production of Cabaret offers a new take on the iconic musical. The Shaw’s renowned acting Ensemble brings the decadent and dangerous Weimar Republic to life, with a creative team that includes musical direction by Paul Sportelli and choreography by Denise Clarke, set design by Michael Gianfrancesco, costume design by Judith Bowden, lighting design by Bonnie Beecher and sound design by John Lott.

It’s 1929 and young American writer Cliff Bradshaw (Gray Powell) has just arrived in Berlin, a city where the party never ends— or so it seems. A visit to the glittering Kit Kat Klub introduces him to cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Deborah Hay), and his life is turned upside down forever. Meanwhile, Hitler’s tyrannical politics are rising fast — Cliff’s German landlady Fraulein Schneider (Corrine Koslo) and Jewish grocer Herr Schultz (Benedict Campbell) must face an impending harsh reality, and even the Kit Kat Klub’s omnipresent Emcee (Juan Chioran) must acknowledge the riotous voices of a new Germany.
