Special Shaw Festival screening of Midnight’s Children supports annual Film Series

Media Release #6

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, January 30, 2013….The Shaw Festival proudly presents a special screening of Midnight’s Children on Friday, February 22 at 6 p.m. in The Shaw’s Festival Theatre. Proceeds from this fundraising event will support the upgrading of much needed technical equipment for The Shaw’s annual Festival Film Series.

Adapted from Salman Rushdie’s Booker Prize winning novel of the same name, Midnight’s Children is directed by Academy Award nominee Deepa Mehta. This epic film follows the lives of Saleem Sinai, the illegitimate son of a poor woman, and Shiva, the offspring of a wealthy couple. The two boys are fated to live the destiny meant for the other when they are switched at birth by a nurse in a Bombay hospital at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947 — India’s independence day from Great Britain. Their lives become mysteriously intertwined and are inextricably linked to India’s whirlwind journey of triumphs and disasters.

Hopeful, comic, with touches of magical realism, Midnight’s Children is a journey at once sweeping in scope and yet intimate in tone. Long deemed as an unfilmable tale, Mehta’s adaptation conjures images and characters as rich and unforgettable as India herself.

Midnight’s Children is nominated for eight 2013 Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Picture.

A post-show reception with food and wine will take place in the Macdonald Heaslip Lounge. Tickets are $75 (film and reception) and $20 (film only). Tickets can be ordered through the Shaw Festival Box Office at 905-468-2172 or 1-800-511-SHAW (7429).
