World and Canadian premieres highlight weekend openings at The Shaw

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, August 4, 2011…The world premiere of the Jay Turvey/Paul Sportelli passionate musical Maria Severa and the Canadian premiere of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Topdog/Underdog officially open this weekend at the Shaw Festival.  Opening first on Friday evening at the Court House Theatre is Maria Severa, a tale based on the life of legendary Portuguese songstress Severa. Next on Saturday evening, the poetically powerful Topdog/Underdog, a contemporary Cain and Abel story, opens at the Studio Theatre.

Dignitaries from local government, Canada’s artistic and business communities, and Shaw supporters will celebrate the premieres at gala dinners held prior to the opening night performances.

Friday, August 5
8 p.m. – World premiere of Maria Severa, directed by Jackie Maxwell
Court House Theatre, 26 Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Saturday, August 6
8 p.m. – Canadian premiere of Topdog/Underdog, directed by Philip Akin
Studio Theatre, 10 Queen’s Parade, Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Shaw Festival’s milestone season began April 7, 2011, runs until October 30, 2011 and also features productions of My Fair Lady, Candida, The President, Drama at Inish – A Comedy, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, On the Rocks, Heartbreak House, The Admirable Crichton and When the Rain Stops Falling on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages.
