Re-envisioned Bernard Shaw political comedy On the Rocks begins The Shaw’s July openings

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, July 7, 2011…The Shaw Festival’s 50th season summer opening weekend starts tomorrow evening at the Court House Theatre. The weekend kicks off with the world premiere of contemporary playwright Michael Healey’s reworking of Bernard Shaw’s political comedy On the Rocks. The opening performances continue on Saturday with the lunchtime presentation of Morwyn Brebner’s adaptation of Ferenc Molnár’s mad-cap comedy The President at the Royal George Theatre and, later that evening, with the fantastical fable The Admirable Crichton by J.M. Barrie, author of the beloved children’s classic Peter Pan, at the Festival Theatre.

In celebration of these exciting new productions, dignitaries from local government, Canada’s artistic and business communities, and Shaw supporters will attend gala dinners prior to the opening night performances.

The Shaw Festival’s milestone season began April 7, 2011, runs until October 30, 2011 and also features productions of My Fair Lady, Candida, Drama at Inish – A Comedy, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Maria Severa, Heartbreak House, Topdog/Underdog and When the Rain Stops Falling on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages.
