“My roots are in the past: my hopes are in the future.” ~ Bernard Shaw

Media Release #14

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, May 20, 2011…The Shaw Festival’s Executive Director Colleen Blake made a special announcement today at the annual company meeting held in The Shaw’s Festival Theatre.

“When planning for the milestone 50th season first began, Senior Management and the Board of Governors undertook an extensive review of the existing facilities,” Ms. Blake said. “A natural step at this important juncture for The Shaw was to explore the possibilities for new performance spaces that would enrich the theatre experience for both audience and artists alike.”

Thanks to an innovative collaboration with Vintage Hotels of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Shaw Festival has reached an agreement securing property which overlooks Lake Ontario and the Niagara River and is currently home to the Anchorage Motel and Restaurant. The Shaw will be able to purchase this ideal property within the next five years to be used as the site for such a project.

Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell added: “Though we are in the very early stages of developing these plans, my heart soars at the myriad possibilities that a new performance space could offer to our artists and audiences.”

Shaw Festival Board Chair Gary Comerford commented: “Fifty years ago, the Shaw Festival was born out of a unique collaboration between a man with a dream and the residents of this historic community — this announcement is a natural evolution for what we now know to be one of the most celebrated theatre companies in North America.”

This agreement is the first of many steps that are part of a multi-year plan, details of which will be announced at a later date.

In the spirit of Bernard Shaw, the Shaw Festival provokes the mind and stirs the soul through a theatre experience so compelling that, year after year, ever-broadening groups of artists, audiences and supporters are drawn to our work in Niagara-on-the-Lake and beyond.
