Seaside town is transformed in Drama at Inish – A Comedy!

“We were all more or less happy and comfortable, good tempered and jolly — until these plays began to put ideas into our heads,” laments resident Annie Twohig.

Media Release #12

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, May 5, 2011 . . . When a high toned theatre troupe hits a sleepy seaside town, it seems like a recipe for disaster. In fact, the opposite occurs when the plays of Ibsen, Chekhov and Strindberg begin to sell out and the denizens of Inish begin to behave in strange and hilarious ways. As the onstage drama moves off stage, the lives of the residents fall off the rails, in ways that are both funny and touching. Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell directs Lennox Robinson’s delightful ensemble piece Drama at Inish – A Comedy.

This rarely-presented work by one of Ireland’s most revered playwrights, and one of the original producers of Ireland’s Abbey Theatre, is now our rediscovered gem in our 50th season celebrations and makes its Canadian premiere with previews beginning today at the Court House Theatre.

Featuring Ric Reid as hotel owner John Twohig, Mary Haney as his sister Lizzie Twohig, Thom Marriott as Hector de la Mare and Corrine Koslo as Constance Constantia, with Donna Belleville, Maggie Blake, Andrew Bunker, Julia Course, Peter Krantz, James Pendarves, Craig Pike, Ken James Stewart and Jay Turvey. Production credits for Drama at Inish – A Comedy include design by Design Director William Schmuck and lighting design by Louise Guinand. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Dora Tomassi and Assistant Stage Manager Barry Burns.
