Shaw’s most charming comedy Candida now in previews

We all go about longing for love; it is the first need of our natures, the loudest cry of our hearts.”

 Media Release #8

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, April 7, 2011 . . . The much anticipated landmark 50th season of the Shaw Festival begins today with preview performances of Bernard Shaw’s Candida at the Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Young sensitive artist and poet Eugene Marchbanks’ ardent attentions towards Candida sow seeds of self-doubt within the heart of her self-indulgent pastor husband, the Reverend James Mavor Morell. Caught between loyalty and passion, it is Candida, Shaw’s New Woman, who shows both “her boys” basic truths about themselves.

Directed by Tadeusz Bradecki, this classic love triangle, and Shaw’s cheeky counterpoint to Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, features Claire Jullien as Candida, Nigel Shawn Williams as the Reverend James Mavor Morell and Wade Bogert-O’Brien as Eugene Marchbanks, with Norman Browning, Krista Colosimo and Graeme Somerville.

Designed by The Shaw’s Design Director William Schmuck, Candida’s production team also includes lighting designer Jock Munro and composer Reza Jacobs. The stage management team includes Stage Manager Meredith Macdonald and Assistant Stage Manager Amy Jewell.

Candida was the first full-length production performed during the Shaw Festival’s inaugural season in 1962.

The Shaw Festival’s milestone season begins April 7, 2011, runs until October 30, 2011 and features an array of diverse theatre on the Festival’s four Niagara-on-the-Lake stages. This momentous season also includes productions of My Fair Lady, Heartbreak House, The Admirable Crichton, On the Rocks, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Maria Severa, Drama at Inish – A Comedy, The President, Topdog/Underdog, When the Rain Stops Falling and a special 50th season two-day event, The Speed of Ideas A Theatrical Forum featuring award-winning playwrights Tony Kushner and Suzan-Lori Parks and author and renowned theatre critic Michael Billington

Candida begins preview performances Thursday, April 7, opens Saturday, May 28 and plays in repertory until Sunday, October 30. Candida is sponsored by Scotiabank Group.
