The Shaw Festival to host Amnesty’s Festival for Freedom Concert

Media Bulletin #10

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, September 17, 2009 . . .The Shaw Festival is proud to present the 21st Annual Festival for Freedom Benefit Concert in support of Amnesty International on Monday, October 5, 2009 at 8 p.m. at the Royal George Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

This evening of family-friendly entertainment will feature songs, dances, poems, monologues, mini-plays, comedy routines, and a few surprises, showcasing the range and diverse talents of the 2009 Company.  This year’s co-hosts are Shaw Ensemble members Krista Colosimo (Brief Encounters and The Entertainer) and Nicola Correia-Damude (In Good King Charles’s Golden Days and Albertine in Five Times).

“Amnesty International has just begun Demand Dignity, an important new campaign intended to help prevent human rights abuses that drive and deepen poverty”, said local Amnesty Chair Martha Cisneros.  “We believe that if we can stop such abuses like the release of toxic wastes in water and soil, eviction of the poor from slums or coveted agricultural land and the denial of health services, education and employment assistance, we will have improved the lives of millions of the extreme poor world-wide. We are most grateful to receive such generous help from the Shaw Festival to raise awareness of human rights work, as well as the funds necessary to carry it out.”

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through Gail Nagley at 905-468-5751 or in-person at both locations of Bernard’s – the Shaw Festival Shop (cash only please).  Bernard’s – the Shaw Festival Shop is located at the Festival Theatre and at 79 Queen Street, next to the Royal George Theatre.  The Festival Theatre location is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., while the Queen Street location is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (8 p.m. on Royal George performance nights).

Since 1989, The Shaw has raised over $101,450 for Amnesty International through this event.  Shaw Festival Company members from all departments donate their time and talents supporting this worthy cause.

Amnesty International is a world-wide movement of people dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights, campaigning to free prisoners of conscience and end political killings, “disappearances” and torture. Those interested in joining the local chapter of Amnesty International may contact Gail Nagley at 905-468-5751.
