Shaw Festival’s Town Preview Raises $8,050 for Niagara-on-the-Lake Charitable Organizations

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, July 29, 2009. . .This year’s Shaw Festival Town Previews of the Noël Coward triplet Brief Encounters raised $8,050 that will benefit twelve Niagara-on-the-Lake charitable organizations. Shaw Festival Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell and Executive Director Colleen Blake will present cheques to representatives of the chosen organizations at an official ceremony held in the lobby of the Shaw Festival Theatre on Friday, July 31, 2009 at 11 a.m.

This year’s Niagara-on-the-Lake charitable organizations receiving support from the Town Preview program are:

  • The Friends of Fort George, $1,000: applied towards the expenses of summer student employment at the Fort and at Brock’s Monument.
  • Upper Canada Lodge Auxiliary, $1,000: assistance with landscape fundraising initiatives
  • The Gallery Players of Niagara, $800: applied towards a concert presentation of a new commission by Canadian composer Michael Oesterle.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Palliative Care, $750: applied towards the purchase of a portable projector, screen and LCD projector.
  • Colonel John Butler Public School, $750: funding assistance for class trips.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Community Policing Committee, $700: funding for annual safety programs.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Public Library, $500: support for Summer Reading Club.
  • Royal Canadian Legion (General Nelles Branch, Niagara-on-the-Lake), $500: funding for the Legion’s Coffee Club for seniors.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake Sustainability Network, $500: assist the environmental consulting program to businesses.
  • Jack Custers’ Bird Sanctuary, $500: financial support for current projects.
  • Shaw Festival Storm, $300: sponsorship of under-9 boys youth soccer team.
  • Canadian Cancer Society (Niagara-on-the-Lake branch), $250: sponsorship of the 10th Annual Golf for a Cure Tournament.

The Town Previews offer Niagara-on-the-Lake residents the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets to preview performances and proceeds raised are distributed to various Niagara-on-the-Lake charitable organizations who apply for funding.
