Stephen Lewis to Speak at Shaw Festival

Media Bulletin #2

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, February 9, 2009 … The Shaw Festival is thrilled to announce that one of the world’s most respected humanitarians, Stephen Lewis, will speak at The Shaw on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 3:00 pm in the Festival Theatre.

This special lecture, entitled Gender Equality: The Single Most Important Struggle on the Planet, is an extension of our Celebrity Lecture Series: Four Lectures in the Provocative Spirit of Bernard Shaw which began in 2007. Other lecturers funded by the Government of Ontario’s Celebrate Ontario Festival and Event Enhancement initiative included Sir Salman Rushdie, Tim Flannery, Seymour Hersh, Ken Wiwa, Mary Walsh, Stevie Cameron, Tomson Highway and Dr. Samantha Nutt. This is Mr. Lewis’ second visit to The Shaw having addressed an audience from our stage in the 2002 lecture series.

On announcing this recent engagement, Shaw Festival Executive Director Colleen Blake said: “We are thrilled that Stephen Lewis will join us to speak about this critical issue and thank the Government of Ontario for supporting this important initiative”

Stephen Lewis is one of the world’s most influential speakers on human rights, social justice and international development. The former UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, he has been named by TIME as one of the 100 Most Influential People In The World — in the same category as The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

Inspired by the brilliance, bravery, humanity and humour of Bernard Shaw, the Shaw Festival is a crucible of progressive and provocative ideas which illuminate our understanding of today’s world. Relevant and engaging theatre on the Festival’s four stages is enhanced each season with a robust education program. Like Bernard Shaw’s, the work of these prominent and passionate speakers shines light on the dilemmas of our world, encouraging us all to take action.
